Eastern Hackathon

A cooperation and competitive initiative for technical innovation in the municipal sector launched by the Secretariat of the Eastern Region under the patronage of HRH Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, which aims to improve the civil life in the Kingdom by involving those with innovative ideas and capabilities in the development phase and employing and supporting technical capabilities to provide solutions that contribute to the objectives of transformation in the municipal sector and the well-being of cities.

Municipal Sector

One of the most vital sectors in the kingdom, affecting the lives of citizens and residents through more than 380 services provided by the sector in various fields, the most prominent of which are: City planning, cleaning and maintenance services. infrastructure services, trade and investment legislation.

The municipal sector is one of the pivotal sectors that cuts across all aspects of life within cities.

The Eastern Region Municipality is also one of the leading and ambitious municipalities in the initiative industry to bring about a cultural shift in all areas.

Paths

The goal of Eastern Hackathon is to educate Saudi society about the challenges of the municipal sector so it can develop and find innovative technical solutions and ideas through three paths

Quality of Life

A path concerned with building and developing the basics of life which contribute to increasing the rate of satisfaction, and promote it for the individual and society, which include infrastructure, public decency behaviors, the visual scene, the humanization of the cities, traffic safety, public parks and roads development, and all other stuffs related with raising the quality of life in the cities.

Healthy Environment

A path concerned with environmental evolution by supporting services that implement environmental health policies, and with monitoring and follow-up activities, all of which are related to the health of urban dwellers. The pathway encourages the use of techniques to direct and catalyze behaviors that contribute to environmental improvement, such as air quality maintenance, sand sprawl control, environmental pollution monitoring, water conservation, desertification management, afforestation and stray animal control.

A path concerned with supporting and developing municipal services provided to the individual and business sectors through improving oversight, raising compliance rates, raising the level of satisfaction, and transforming creative and innovative ideas into projects that serve the municipal sector.

It is also concerned with the ideas and objectives of transforming Saudi cities into smart cities that contribute to the goals of national development and future civil life.

The Competition

Participation is open to all to be part of the virtual phase of the Hackathon, in which the contestants will be guided and developed their ideas. Only 25 teams will be nominated to compete for the final stage.

During the Hackathon journey, a series of workshops and discussion sessions will be provided. The workshops will help participants acquire knowledge and develop ideas, which will help provide viable and ready outputs to be part of the development system in the municipal sector.

In addition to the support and guidance provided by experts and guides to create innovative and integrated projects, they will be presented before the arbitration committee to select the winning teams and announce them at the closing ceremony to be held on March 27, 2022 at the Eastern Center – Scitech.

Judging Criteria

Ideas will be nominated based on the following  criteria:

  • Innovation, which means that the idea is new and unique.
  • Impact, which is the level of improvement brought about by the idea.
  • Feasibility, which means the extent of its impact and its applicability on the ground.
  • Effectiveness, which means the benefit of the idea versus its cost.
  • Comprehensiveness of implementation, which means the requirements of the idea necessary for its implementation.
  • Commitment to controls, including applying government restrictions and controls, and applying the standards of the National Cybersecurity Authority in the project.

Participation does not require you to be a programmer or a data expert to be part of the hackathon challenge, the most diverse teams are often the most successful.

There will be two weeks of mentoring sessions and then there will be 3 days of attendance to work on the idea and announce the results.

The hackathon will be launched on 26th of February and will end on 27th March 2022.
